Election 2020: STAR Ghana Foundation supports GBC, GJA and 24 CSOs

STAR-Ghana Foundation has signed Grant documents with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, GBC, the Ghana Journalists Association, GJA and 24 other organisations under the Strategic, Managed and Local Partnership components of its election 2020 projects.

The Grant which is ¢9 million will fund 26 selected projects focusing on achieving a successful election in 2020.

Director General of the GBC, Professor Amin Alhassan, who signed for GBC said the Corporation is committed to deliver on its mandate as a Public Broadcaster and will ensure that the grant will be used prudently for the public to be well informed and educated on the electoral process.

Executive Director of STAR Ghana Foundation Ibrahim Tanko Amidu and Chair, Governing Council of STAR Ghana Foundation Dr Esther Ofei-Aboagye signed on behalf of the Foundation.

Meanwhile, STAR-Ghana Foundation has selected 26 projects aimed at promoting peaceful, inclusive and credible elections in the upcoming 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections for funding.

Speaking at the Launch of the Projects, Executive Director of STAR Ghana foundation, Ibrahim-Tanko Amidu said the projects are intended to promote active participation of the citizenry to the electoral process and strengthen engagements with the State to ensure accountable, transparent and responsive governance at both national and local levels.

In August this year, STAR-Ghana Foundation, a national center for active citizenship and philanthropy issued a call for proposals, inviting interested and eligible organisations to design and implement projects aimed at promoting peaceful, inclusive and credible Elections next year. Following a competitive process, 26 projects were selected for funding.  Executive Director of STAR-Ghana, Ibrahim-Tanko Amidu said the Foundation is committed to strengthening citizens and Civil Society actions that contribute to deepening democratic governance.

British High Commissioner, Iain Walker urged Ghanaians to sustain the track record of free, fair and transparent elections come 202. This he said should be devoid of vigilantism to promote investment opportunities.

The programme brought together election Stakeholders such as the National Commission for Civic Eduactaion, the Electoral Commission, representatives of political parties, the European Union delegations, representatives of the selected projects.

They shared experiences from previous elections and made recommendations on how to improve in the next year’s elections.
