Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, says the country’s power sector has been stabilised following months of reforms and targeted interventions.
According to him, when he took office, the sector was facing a major shortfall of about 700 megawatts in December 2024, leading to persistent load shedding and public frustration.
“Upon assuming office, I inherited a challenging power sector situation. GRIDCo’s records for 2024 revealed a persistent pattern of load shedding, culminating in a significant shortfall of over 700 megawatts in December 2024. As Minister, I faced intense scrutiny and pressure to deliver on our promise to stabilise the power supply,” he said.
The Minister noted that with the support of Ghana Gas and the cooperation of industry leaders, significant progress has been made.
“For several months now, we’ve maintained a stable power supply, with no load shedding,” he added.
Mr Jinapor explained that ongoing reforms are addressing both technical and financial challenges, and the government is working to consolidate these gains. The ministry’s long-term objectives include energy security to guarantee uninterrupted supply, economic stability through reliable electricity for households and businesses, and industrial growth powered by sustainable energy delivery.
The Minister made these remarks during a visit to the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant in the Ellembele District, where he inspected ongoing maintenance works.
