The Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, has charged the newly inaugurated Board of the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUPSA) to be proactive and efficient in the discharge of their work to help resettlement planning in the country.
The mandate of the Authority is to provide leadership for sustainable development of land and human resettlement through a decentralized planning system.  Inaugurating the 17-member Board in Accra, Dr Afriyie asked them to be visionary in the discharge of their duty.
“The Board had a lot of things to do; declaring that the Authority was created not long ago, so it had got a lot of teething problems to deal with, especially at the operational levels.”Dr Afriyie said.
Chairman of the Board, Professor Kwasi Kwafo Adarkwa expressed gratitude to the government for the confidence reposed in them to steer the affairs of the Authority.
He said the Authority will build more synergies to thwart the springing up of “kiosk estates” in the cities.
“The recent proliferation of “kiosk estates” in parts of Accra was a consequence of unplanned urbanization. …Such unplanned and unsustainable spatial developments put a dent on LUSPA being the mother authority in charge of all physical and spatial developments in the country,” Prof Adarkwa said.
He called on all stakeholders to support the important role of Authority.
“With the help of all relevant stakeholders, we will jealously guide this role by becoming increasingly more proactive and effective in planning to prevent situations such as the proliferation of “kiosk estates in the capital and other major cities.” he noted.
Members of the Board include Ebenezer Sam, Ministry of Works and Housing, Dr Kodjo Essiem Mensah-Aborampa, National Development Planning Authority, Dr. Joseph Kwaku Amaglo, Ghana Institution of Surveyors and Dr Christine Asare, Environmental Protection Agency.
