Environmentalists say building on decommissioned landfill sites can cause disaster

The demand for land in urban areas such as Accra has increased tremendously due to rural-urban migration.

As a result, people struggle for available spaces, without checking whether it is a wetland, waterway,or a decommissioned landfill site.

Some people go to the extent of engaging tricycles to fill query pits with garbage, where they later put up their buildings.

All these experts say contribute to the perennial flooding within the city.This situation is prevalent around Pambrose and Mango line, which are Coastal wetland.

Also, the Oblogo Landfill site at Weija Gbawe, is one area that has been filled with refuse, to allow for construction to take place.

In an interview with GBC News on the effect of building on dumping sites, an Environmentalist, Henry Ofosu Addo said building on decommissioned landfill sites can cause fire.
