Deputy Managing Director of United Steel Company, Fadi El Chami, says the furnace explosion that occurred at the company’s premises on Monday was as a result of the heating of an induction furnace at the production plant.

The explosion, according to him, was internal with one person sustaining an injury.

On August 13 this year, the Company was asked to shut down over environmental challenges and on Monday the company decided to heat up its induction furnace because the system had been idle.

During the heat-up process, the furnace exploded leaving one person injured.

Mr. Fadi noted that a quick response from the Ghana National Fire Service curbed the spread of the fire.

Since the explosion, the EPA, factory inspectorate, BNI, and the Police have all visited the site to assess the extent of the damage.

Mr. Fadi said the company is working on a secondary system at the factory to deal with any future occurrence.
