Fair Wages races against time to avert looming labour unrest by 23 unions

The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) will meet today, July 12, to begin moves to avert a looming nationwide strike by organized labour.

The Commission will start negotiations with the 23 labour unions and associations on their demands for 20% Cost of Living Allowance (COLA).

The meeting, which will be held at the Ministry of Health conference room in Accra, follows the emergency meeting held between government’s team and organized labour on Friday, July 8, to discuss the COLA.

According to a statement signed by the Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Benjamin Arthur, government’s team that is expected to be at the meeting are representatives from the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Education, Ministry of National Security, Controller and Accountant General’s Department and the Ghana Education Service.

For organized labour, the unions and associations include the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC), the Ghana Federation of Labour, Ghana National Association of Teachers, GNAT, National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), the Ghana Federation of Disabled Workers’ Union, the Public Services Workers’ Union, the Ghana Medical Association, and the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG).
