The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) says 75% of the driving licences it checked among ride-hailing drivers in Ghana were fake, raising concerns about passenger safety and the enforcement of licensing rules in the sector.

The Chief Executive Officer of the DVLA, Julius Neequaye Kotey, disclosed this on Atinka TV on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

According to Mr Kotey, checks conducted through the DVLA’s ride-hailing monitoring system showed that a large number of drivers operating on ride-hailing platforms were using fraudulent licences.

He said the situation was a serious concern because drivers using fake licences may not have gone through the proper licensing process required to operate legally.

“We have issues with ride-hailing drivers. When we checked the ride-hailing monitoring system on our end, 75% of the licences we checked in the ride-hailing space were all fake,” he said.

Mr Kotey said the problem was not limited to one ride-hailing company but involved drivers operating on some of the major platforms in Ghana.

He specifically mentioned Bolt, Uber and Yango as platforms where the DVLA had identified drivers using fake licences.

The DVLA CEO urged stakeholders in the ride-hailing industry to take the issue seriously and ensure that drivers operating on their platforms have valid licences.

The disclosure comes amid growing concerns about safety and regulation in Ghana’s expanding ride-hailing sector.
