Fire destroys 115 acres of mango plantation at Dambai

About 115-acre mango plantation fruiting for the minor season has been consumed by wild fire at Dambai in the Krachi East Municipality of the Volta region.

The Deputy Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Mr Michael Gyato, who owns the farm told the media that although bush fires were rampart in the Municipality, he suspected an arson because a similar incident occurred in 2009.

He said management of the farm had put in place adequate measures including; extensive fire-belt around the whole acreage and said some people were behind the destruction.

Mr Gyato, who is also the Member of Parliament for the Krachi East Constituency, said only about three acres of the plantation survived the fire, which also destroyed drip irrigation equipment worth millions of Cedis.

The Deputy Minister said the fire started at about 0045 hours and that the Police was investigating the incident.

The mango farm, established in 2008 also had an adjoining 30 acre teak plantation and engaged about 80 workers.
