Fire guttered Juaben Serwaa Market at Koforidua in the New Juaben South Municipality of the Eastern Region early Wednesday morning. Even though there were no reports of casualty, some items were burnt. They included foodstuffs, rubbers, used clothing, shops and unspecified amount of cash among others.

The Municipal Fire Officer, Emmanuel Acquaye said following a distress call, a team of fire officers from the Municipality were dispatched to the scene to bring the inferno under control.

Due to the nature of the fire, another team from the New Juaben North Municipality was called in to assist.

Divisional Officer Acquaye said it took the team three to four hours to quench the fire.

Congestion at the scene, according to him, made things difficult for the officers as most traders and by-standers forcibly attempted to salvage their goods while others tried to assist the fire officers.

He said the cause of the fire is yet to be investigated.

Some affected shop owners lamented the fire outbreak at the market.
