Flag raising ceremony held to commemorate this year’s World Press Freedom Day

A flag raising ceremony has been held at the Ghana International Press Centre in Accra to commemorate this year’s World Press Freedom Day.

The event which was organised under strict invitation in tandem with the COVID-19 public gathering rules was attended by a few media practitioners, leaders of media groups, representatives from UN bodies and the police.

In his remarks the UNESCO Country Director, Abdourahaman Diallo, emphasized the importance of the media in the development of any country and commended the journalists for the roles in the fight against COVID-19.

Deputy Minister of Information Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah Adjei also acknowledged the work of the media in national development. She spoke about the theme of the Day; “Journalism without Fear and Favour”.

The President of the Ghana Journalists Association Affail Monney lauded journalists for their contributions towards the fight against COVID-19.

He noted that impunity accounted for Ghana’s current Press freedom ranking in Africa and the world and entreated authorities to help check attacks on journalists.

The Chairman of the National Media Commission, Yaw Boadu Ayeboafoh, was concerned about the use of fake news materials on the main stream media and urged journalists to use their fact checking mechanism to avoid using fake information.
