“It not enough to just give the forecast'' - Ghana Meteo Agency

By Noah Owusu

The World Meteorological Organization, WMO, a specialized agency of the United Nations whose mandate covers weather, climate and water resources is to partner the Ghana Meteorological Agency to recalibrate its forecast to make it an intact based one. The process would also enable the Agency to preempt consequences of forecasts for early actions that could mitigate impact of disaster associated with the weather.

“It not enough to just give the forecast. We are now moving to the era where we are giving an intact based forecast so that if I say that there is going to rain what’s going to be the consequences when it should come. If we are aware of what will be happening to us and if we take action then obviously we will be able to mitigate the risk that will be coming”.

A Principal Meteorologist, Ghana Meteorological Agency, Nana Kofi Opoku made this known to GBC News on the occasion of World Meteorological Day, which is observed annually on 23 March 2022.

World Meteorological Day was instituted in 1961 to commemorate the World Meteorological Organization creation in 1950. Touching on the theme for the commemoration “Early Warning and Early Action” Mr. Opoku, said having early signs helps in taking steps to reduce risks that come with climate change.

“If we are able to have fore knowledge of what is about to happen and we take steps to mitigate them and we will find out that at the end although the disaster and things will be happening but they will be minimized”.
