As Government intensifies efforts to restore water bodies ravaged by galamsey activities, a breakfast meeting has taken place in Accra to discuss congenial ways to help restore Ghana’s water bodies.
The Embassy of Israel organized the meeting, as it looks forward to partnering with the Government and partners to find sustainable solutions to clean up Ghana’s water resources and also introduce the Israel Water Ecosystem to the measures instituted to tackle the problem in the Country.
Its land mass is over 60 percent desert. Israel is located in a semi- arid climate zone. For thousands of years, the history of the Land of Israel has been influenced by the scarcity of water. In recent decades, cutting-edge innovations developed in Israel to tackle the water shortage, positioned Israel as a world leader in all aspects of water management.
The major achievement of Israel’s water sector was supplying the demand of water in a sustainable way. This was done by saving water, reusing wastewater and desalinating sea and brackish water, protecting water bodies, thereby increasing available supply.
Panel discussions on how best Ghana can adopt and merge some best innovations from Israel and local technological inventions in Ghana to restore the Water bodies were put forward for deliberation.
Other areas of discussions centered on strengthening institutions to protect water resources, active community engagements and introducing livelihood empowerment programs in mining communities.
Israel’s Ambassador to Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone, Madam Shani Cooper, said a multi-faceted approach should be employed to address the issue of restoring Ghana’s water bodies.
The Government recently launched a renewed effort to fight illegal mining. This has led to many actions being taken in that regard.
