The Migrant Labour General Workers’ Union International, is urging all Migrant Mining Workers to as a matter of urgency, withdraw their services from sites earmarked as environmentally threatened zones to save their lives.
The Union’s call follows Government’s renewed fight against illegal mining, also known as Galamsey.
A statement signed by the General Secretary of the union, Justice Baako Ntramah, said the group supports the national taskforce against illegal mining and cautioned migrant miners to desist from going back to sites they have been banned from mining.
This he noted is in line with the Union’s quest to protect the lives and safety of its members.
The Union, however, condemned the burning of mining equipment and offices, suggesting that government should find other means of clearing this equipment and re-assembling them at strategic points named “Enclave of Illegal Mining Equipment” for future use.
The statement also urged Migrant Mining Workers to demand outstanding COVID-19 entitlements from their employers.
