GBC reportage gets results: Burst pipe at Shiashie fixed

By Nathaniel Nartey

The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, GBC has been commended for its swift response and reportage on the burst Ghana water Company pipeline at Shiashie which flooded a portion of the area for several hours. Pressure from the burst pipe brought down a fence wall and destroyed some electrical appliances.

The commendations came from residents, traders and hawkers around the shiashie traffic light who were affected by the incident. They say GBC’s timely reportage prompted authorities within the Ayawaso Municipal Assembly and the Ghana Water Company to fix the burst pipe.

Our reporter Nathaniel Nartey visited the area to assess the extent of damage caused by the December 16, 2021 incident.

Residents, Traders and hawkers around the Shiashie Traffic light are counting their losses from the burst pipeline which flooded the area where their wares are kept.

The hawkers had adopted a piece of land which has been fenced on the Emmanuel Eye Clinic lane which is at the end of that stretch, next to the traffic light.

GBC News noticed that the ground was still muddy from yesterday’s flood when GBC News arrived.

A portion of the fence wall was also brought down as a result of the burst pipeline.

One of the hawkers told GBC News that they had resorted to alternative means of chilling the drinks on sale, because the deep freezer used, which is in a container on the piece of land in question, has been rendered redundant. She said the water was almost at knee level.

She commented on GBC News for the swift response which according to her forced the authorities responsible to act.

”The deep freezer we all use is now spoiled and we have no option than to buy ice blocks to chill the drinks and sell. You can see the whole area is muddy and pressure brought that wall down.”

A resident close by shared similar sentiments on GBC News’ quick response.

”GBC was the only media house here yesterday and because they came very early to report on the issue, the authorities were forced to come and fix it. Well done GBC.”

It is still unclear what caused the Ghana Water Pipeline which was buried in the ground to burst, however traders, hawkers and residents are hopeful that the Ghana Water Company’s response will be the last in what appears to be a frequent occurrence in the area.
