Ghana Broadcasting Corporation’s Volta Regional Station, Volta Star Radio has gone to the rescue of a 12-year-old boy, Muntari Mohammed who was detained at the Ho Teaching Hospital. His parents were not able to pay his medical bills after receiving treatment at the facility. Muntari suffered a severe abdominal injury after being pushed down on a wall by a fellow pupil at the Teyteyman SDA Basic School in the Jasikan Municipality of the Oti Region.

Muntari Mohammed was detained for a month at the Ho Teaching Hospital where he underwent surgical operation because his parents could not settle the cost of 2,411 Ghana Cedis medical bills. His mother, Rita Henyo contacted the management of GBC-Volta Star Radio in Ho where an appeal was launched on air to raise funds to defray the cost of treatment. An amount of 4,500 Ghana Cedis was realised through the benevolence of listeners of the radio station.

Management of Volta Star Radio after settling the medical bills presented a seed capital and a deep freezer purchased with the balance of the amount raised to Rita Henyo who is unemployed to engage in income-generating activities. The Volta Regional Director of GBC, John Gadawusu was happy the kind donation by listeners made it possible to put smiles on the face of Muntari and his parents. “We hope that the business support package will enable Rita to start an economic venture to look after the child.

We are grateful to our listeners for the gesture; this is not the first time. Anytime there is an issue of this kind they respond massively”, he said. Young Muntari’s mother, Rita Henyo expressed joy about the turn of events and pledged to utilise the business support package prudently. “We are happy for the gesture and that is why we thank everybody that made a contribution towards our rescue. I will use the deep freezer to sell ice water and ice cream at a school close to where we live” she said. Young Muntari and his mother have since been discharged from the hospital.
