National Farmers Day in Ghana is celebrated on the first Friday of December each year to recognise the contributions of farmers and fishers in the country.

The holiday is designed to pay respect to the importance of the farming and fishing industry in the socio-economic growth of Ghana.

Ghana acknowledges farmers and fishers untiring efforts at feeding our growing population, providing raw materials to the nation’s industries, and contributing substantially to the nation’s foreign exchange earnings.

In August the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia launched this year’s National Farmers Day celebrations to be held in the Northern Region today December 1.

The celebration of this year’s National Farmers Day will be held in Tamale, the capital of the Northern Region. It is on the theme; ‘Agriculture: Moving Ghana Beyond Aid’.

The theme, according to the sector Minister, Dr. Afriyie Akoto is very relevant and appropriate because it reflects the “premium placed on agriculture” by the current government and by “implication the farmer who’s the focus and target of government’s policies and programmes.”

Farmers and fishermen through whose hard work the nation provided food for the nation will receive awards in order of best practices and outputs.

The event, which is the 34th edition since the introduction of the awards scheme, is expected to attract stakeholders in agriculture and fisheries from across the country and beyond.
