Ghana and Mozambique sign bilateral agreements to elevate diplomatic ties

Ghana and Mozambique have signed two bilateral agreements to deepen the relations between the two countries.

The agreements are the Permanent Joint Partnership Commission for Cooperation and a Joint waiver on visa requirements and diplomatic service passports.

President Akufo-Addo said by these agreements, ”the two countries will elevate the existing cooperation and boost the economic and political relations”.

President Akufo-Addo also extended a hand to the President of Mozambique, Felipe Jacinto Nyusi for both countries to join forces in order to stand in readiness for the seeming potential terrorist attacks in the Sub-region.

President Akufo-Addo said the region can not turn a blind eye to the challenge stressing that Ghana is not oblivious to the fact that the threat of terrorism is getting closer. President Akufo-Addo made these remarks when he welcomed President Felipe Jacinto Nyusi to the Jubilee House as part of his four-day visit to Ghana.

President Nyusi also touched on some of the key areas where both countries can strengthen ties. He mentioned education, energy, climate change, health among others.

This is the first time a sitting President of Mozambique has visited the country. President Felipe Jacinto Nyusi visit which is on the instance of President Akufo-Addo is aimed at deepening diplomatic, economic and bilateral relations between the two countries. The two agreements signed between the two countries will further enhance relations while setting the stage for greater collaboration between Ghana and Mozambique. President Akufo Addo said government is pleased to receive him as this visit is long over due. He noted that there is the need for both countries to deepen collaboration in areas such as education, agriculture, diplomacy oil and gas among others. President Akufo touched on the Russian invasion of Ukraine which is having a negative toll on economies across and the rising terrorist attacks in the Sub region.
President Nyusi in a remark said the two countries have a lot in common stressing that Mozambique has taken a cue from Ghana on the one district one hospital initiative and this will be replicated in the country.

The agreements were signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway and her counterpart, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mozambique, Veronica Nathaniel Glovo initialed on behalf of her country. President Nyusi later on visited the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum where he will lay a wreath. On Tuesday, May 24, 2022 President Nyusi will attend the Annual General meeting of the African Development Bank Group. He is expected to meet the Mozambican community in Ghana. President Nyusi will address Parliament on Wednesday, May 25, 2022 before departure.
