Ghana has been commended for leading the way in the celebration of the Year of Return on the continent.

This is according to a returnee and leader of the Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church Dr. Stephen Howard.

Dr. Howard who is leading a delegation of the church based in the United States to Accra said Ghana is the only country in Africa to have outlined several activities for the year long celebration and should be commended.

He told GBC’s Nathaniel Nartey in an interview that the visit of several African Americans to Ghana this year is due to the efforts of the government in prioritising the celebrations.

”From my research Ghana is the only country that is doing something meaningful concerning the celebration of the repatriation of African Americans….what Ghana is doing is very visible and they did a good job of putting the word out there and its easier for those coming home to identify with what Ghana is doing “.

Dr. Howard called on African Americans returning home to leave a legacy behind and not focus on celebrating and merry making alone.

“The celebration must be meaningful…..there has to be something tangible to commemorate our return…its not enough to just come and celebrate, we must do something else the celebration is useless.”

The “Year of Return, Ghana 2019” is a major landmark spiritual and birth-right journey inviting the Global African family, home and abroad, to mark 400 years of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in Jamestown, Virginia.

The arrival of enslaved Africans marked a sordid and sad period, when our kith and kin were forcefully taken away from Africa into years of deprivation, humiliation and torture.
