The Ranking Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament, Samuel Abu Jinapor, is calling for a more restrained and strategic diplomatic approach as tensions rise between Ghana and Israel following recent deportations involving citizens of both countries.

Reacting on the matter, Mr. Jinapor said the Minority supports any legitimate effort by the government to protect Ghanaians abroad, but stressed that the situation requires careful handling to avoid escalating the dispute.

“Any effort by the Government of Ghana to protect the interests and dignity of Ghanaians abroad should be welcomed,” he said.

He urged the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to adopt a more discreet and measured response, cautioning that public exchanges risk inflaming an already delicate situation.

“It is important for the Minister for Foreign Affairs to take the path of quiet, calm and strategic diplomacy in dealing with these matters,” he added.

Mr. Jinapor noted Ghana and Israel’s long-standing diplomatic relations, which date back more than 60 years, and emphasised the need to maintain Ghana’s reputation for balanced and principled foreign policy.

The Ranking Member described the conflicting accounts as concerning, adding that clarity is needed to preserve Ghana’s diplomatic credibility.

“Ghana’s foreign policy response must be guided by sound judgement, prudence and measured engagement through the appropriate diplomatic channels,” he said.

Mr. Jinapor added that the Minority intends to raise the matter on the floor of Parliament and seek further clarification from the Foreign Affairs Minister.
