Ghana is losing millions of dollars it could have generated from exportation of salt due to under exploitation of the resource and lack of effective government policies in the sector.

According to statistics, Ghana has the potential to produce up to three million metric tonnes of salt annually along its 500 km coastal line. Currently, Ghana produces just about 250,000 metric tonnes.

Communities along the Keta Lagoon such as Anlo-Afiadenyigba, and Adina as well as those along the Songhor Lagoon at Ada have the highest potential.

The Executive Director of Third World Network, a CSO, Dr. Yao Graham said for Ghana to derive the maximum benefit from salt, government must re-direct its attention to artisanal and small scale miners with the view to enhancing their skills in terms of production and harvesting methods as well as marketing.
