Today is International Literacy Day. It is a day set aside by the United Nations Education, Scientific Organization, UNESCO to celebrate and remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society.
Despite progress made, literacy challenges persist with at least 773 million young people and adults lacking basic literacy skills today. The day is being marked under the theme “Literacy for a human-centered recovery: Narrowing the digital divide”. In Ghana officials say, a week’s celebration is being held. Techiman could host the national event.
Speaking on the GTV Breakfast Show, Head of the Community Outreach Unit of the Complementary Education Division (formerly the Non-Formal Education Division), Eric Amanor, said the premise of the Complementary Education is to bring learning closer to the people. He disclosed that learning Centres are being established in districts nationwide.
“We are having programs for school dropouts and also special modules for artisans to make them more productive for the market,” Mr. Amanor said.
On how Covid had impacted their sessions, Mr. Amanor said Radio Literacy Programs were in place and announced that the Programs would be enhanced.
PRO of the Complementary Education Division, Faustina Kabumah, disclosed that as a result of the Covid, education was halted in some instances.
She said as part of the International Literacy Day celebration, trees that were planted during the “Greening Ghana” exercise would be nurtured.
