Ghana has marked Mathematics Day. The objective of the 2021 national mathematics day is to raise awareness about the importance of mathematics considering the challenges that come with the study of the subject.

Over the years, some students have performed poorly in the subject.

For the President of the Ghana Mathematics Society, mathematics solves all developmental problems. Prof. Sitsofe Anku says mathematics is life and advocates for mathematics camps in communities.

The idea that the study of mathematics and its success is only available to those born as “mathematics people” has been challenged in recent years, showing that the love and knowledge for the subject develops in the brain through learning and practice. This starts from the professional development of teachers to making the subject as practicable to students.

The President of the Ghana Mathematics Society, Prof. Sitsofe Anku believes that Ghanaians pay lip service to the study of mathematics.

He said mathematics can solve all the developmental challenges we face as a country from digitization to agriculture. This will help avoid a waste of resources, he noted, and improve the system.

Prof. Anku says you must know the role of mathematics in your profession. National mathematics day has been adopted by the GES to help break the myths surrounding the subject which is seen as difficult for many students.

Meanwhile, teachers and students at the basic schools in Wa Municipality of Upper West Region are calling for the provision of modern materials to aid the teaching and learning of mathematics.

GBC’s Sualah Abdul-Wahab who visited some schools in the Wa Municipality reports that there were quiz competitions to whip up the interest of students in the study of the subject, as Ghana marks Mathematics Day.
