Government says it has no intention of banning rice importation now or in the near future. Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto at a media briefing said what government is doing is rather to support more farmers to boost production.

He said the focus on productivity is key.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture will on Monday June 3, meet with stakeholders over the ban on some vegetables.

The Ministry placed a temporary ban on the export of Capsicum, Solanum, Luffa and some leafy vegetables to the international market.

The suspension has become necessary due to new EU directives to all countries to re-provide dossiers on the management of harmful organisms on some of the vegetables.

At a media briefing in Accra, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, said the high disregard for standards is becoming a problem and there is the need to deal with it drastically.

The Ministry, he said will use the suspension period to address all possible loopholes and challenges before the resumption of export of vegetables.
