The Ghana Police Service in collaboration with the Hanns Seidel Foundation, a German Non-profit organization has organized a “Four-day Capacity Building Course” for Middle Management Personnel made up of Chief Inspectors and Inspectors, who will in turn train Junior Officers.

The Training is to enhance Police professionalism and practices, and also help to regain the public trust in the discharge of their duties.

At the Opening Ceremony, Director General-Research Planning and Transformation of the Ghana Police Service, DCOP Dr. Ernest Owusu, said the end goal is to ensure the Police Service regains its integrity.

The Police, “Our friend” is a known statement in the public domain which simply means policing is a shared responsibility. Reports of some police Officers harassing civilians or suspects have left the integrity of the Service in doubt. Some officers of the law have equally been found on the wrong side of the law. Recognizing the challenge with restoring the image of the profession, the Ghana Police Service has organized the capacity building
anchored on the theme, “Enhancing Professionalism in terms of human rights and community engagement in the interest of public safety”.

The training focuses on a number of areas including Restoring Public Trust, regaining public confidence and commanding public respect. Director-General, Research, Planning and Transformation, DCOP Dr. Ernest Owusu said the training course has come at the right time looking at the courses being treated.

“We are now struggling for a new professionalism because of that some of the officers commit themselves a lot but are also giving their best so that we go a long way to strength our legitimacy in the eyes of the people we protect.”

“Some of the courses we are organising include ethics, motivational aspect, code of conducts, police operations and effectiveness and other police practices. this will go a long way to enhance our image”.

He charged Personnel to take the course seriously and hoped the course achieves its purpose.

“We want the Police Personnel to come out dedicated, responsible, and abide by all the practices and it will help them to achieve a lot.”

The first phase of the training will end on Friday, February 4, 2022.
