The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to sustainable forest management and environmental protection, stating that the country is taking concrete steps to achieve global forest conservation goals.

Speaking at the 21st Session of the United Nations Forum on Forests in New York, Mr. Buah said Ghana is actively implementing policies and initiatives aimed at protecting forests, restoring degraded lands and ensuring sustainable use of natural resources.

The forum, organised by the United Nations, is being held from May 11 to May 15, 2026.

According to the Minister, who is also acting as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Ghana remains fully committed to achieving the Global Forest Goals established by the United Nations.

He said the government of President John Mahama is translating environmental commitments into practical actions through nationwide forest restoration and conservation programmes.

“Ghana is not just turning commitments into concrete actions, but building realistic buffers with nationwide restoration of forests,” he stated.

Mr. Buah described Ghana as one of the leading countries implementing practical measures to promote sustainable forest governance and environmental protection.

The Minister also highlighted Ghana’s progress in forest governance and the timber industry.

According to him, Ghana issued its first Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) licence in August 2025, making the country the first in Africa and the second in the world after Indonesia to do so.

“Every timber product we now ship to Europe carries verifiable proof of legal and sustainable origin,” he said.

He noted that the development demonstrates Ghana’s commitment to transparency, accountability and sustainable timber production.

“That’s transparency, that’s accountability, that’s Ghana leading by example,” he added.

Mr. Buah further told delegates that Ghana has intensified enforcement measures against illegal mining and unlawful logging activities.

According to him, government interventions are already yielding visible results in the fight against environmental degradation.

“We have also intensified enforcement against illegal logging and mining,” he stressed.

The Minister reaffirmed Ghana’s determination to protect its forests and natural resources for future generations while contributing meaningfully to global environmental sustainability efforts.
