The Ghana Railway Company has begun a three-day free passenger service on the Takoradi-Tarkwa railway line to herald free commercial operation from 5th February.

This follows the granting of authorization by the Ghana Railway Development Authority to the Railway Company to run full commercial passenger service.

The company has for the past 13 years not been running passenger services due to myriad of challenges such as deteriorated rail tracks, lack of capital injection, absence of the political will and managerial difficulties

At about 6:30 am today (January 28), five sets of coaches and a locomotive with a capacity of 80 passengers set off from the Takoradi Train Station to Tarkwa for the free ride.

Government, in 2017 established the Ministry of Railways and Development and charged it with the responsibility to rehabilitate the existing lines and construct new lines to facilitate national development.

Speaking to journalists on board the train, Deputy Managing Director of the Ghana Railway Company, Dr Michael Adjei Anyetei said all is well for the company to resume full passenger services.
