The Republic of Ghana and the Kingdom of Spain held political consultations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration on March 13, 2024, in accordance with a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two countries in 2005.
The Ghanaian side was led by the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, while the Spanish side was led by the Secretary of State for Foreign and Global Affairs, Diego Martínez Belío.
During the consultations, the two sides reviewed areas of bilateral cooperation and underscored their commitment to deepening relations. Both parties also agreed on the need to continue supporting multilateralism and the rule of law globally. They acknowledged ECOWAS’ role in preserving stability and promoting economic growth in West Africa, and stressed satisfaction with EU-Africa relations under the Global Gateway Initiative and other instruments.
The delegations also discussed how to strengthen cooperation in the areas of Trade and Investment, International Affairs, Human Rights, Migration, and Defence, including the fight against terrorism and threats to maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.
The two sides agreed to increase cooperation in tourism within the context of the United Nations Tourism Organisation (UNTO), where Ghana has been newly elected as an Executive Council Member and Spain as a Permanent Executive Council Member.
