International trade has been hit severely by COVID-19 and an important product that will be missed on the market will be imported chicken. With the local industry being unable to meet the demand, people will turn to fish.

But this industry has for more than two decades recorded an alarming decline. This has affected livelihoods of fishers and impacted negatively on the economy.

Operators in the industry have been blaming each other for indulging in Illegal Unreported and Unregulated, IUU, fishing.

The Ghana Industrial Trawlers Association, GITA, has issued a warning to its members that anyone caught indulging in transshipment of fish, popularly call ‘Saiko’, will be severely dealt with.

The President of the Association, Sammy Okai Quaye, issued the warning at the first meeting of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Society of Ghana.
