The Upper East Region has been allotted 170,0000 seedlings for planting under the Green Ghana project.
As part of the project, there will be a nationwide tree planting exercise on June 11 to help improve the vegetative cover. Deputy Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission, Sulemana Nyadia, paid a working visit to the region to assess preparations for the tree planting exercise.
The project dubbed Green Ghana will start on June 11 this year. The government through the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources launched the Green Ghana Project in March as part of activities marking this year’s International Day of Forests.
More than five million trees are expected to be planted in a day across the country, as an initial programme under the Green Ghana Project. The exercise seeks to encourage Ghanaians to plant more trees to preserve and protect the country’s forest cover and the environment. The state of the forest reserve indicates that there is a general increase in forest disturbance from the wetter to drier forest areas.
About 14 percent of the total permanent forest estates in Ghana are without adequate forest cover. The tree planting is part of strategies to embark on aggressive afforestation.
Speaking with GBC News, Upper East Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission, Emmanuel Yeboah, said they are ready for the exercise.
