Workers of Sekondi-based Ghana Households Utility Company, GHUMCO, this morning had to run for their lives after they detected gas leakage within the premises of the company.

In an interview with GBC’s Radio Ghana, a worker at the facility said a gas tanker came to discharge gas but it was realised that there was a leakage and that caused fear and panic among the workers.

He said the workers were advised by management to leave the premises to safer grounds and quickly called in the Fire Service to stabilize the situation.

The Fire Service and the Police were compelled to block the main Takoradi-Sekondi road for close to two hours.

Two years ago, the Company witnessed a gas explosion which injured more than one hundred people.

The Western Regional Security Council set up a Committee to investigate the circumstances leading to the explosion.

The Committee in its report, recommended that the Company should always ensure that there are fire service personnel around any-time they discharge gas but that has not been fully observed.
