The President of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA), Roland Affail Monney has expressed worry over the attacks on journalists in recent years.

He said Media freedom in Ghana has not totally been removed hence, the promulgation of the Right to Information Law is a timely intervention.

Speaking at an event to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the GJA in Accra, Mr. Monney noted that the security of journalists is being compromised because some people have become highly intolerant to dissenting views.

He therefore called on government to institute punitive measures against the attacks on journalist irrespective of the status of the perpetrators.

Mr. Monney also warned journalists to desist from circulating fake news as well as other unethical behaviours in the line of duty.  He howver warned that these should not warrant media brutality.

Mr. Monney also said GJA is not only mandated to defend press freedom in Ghana, but to ensure that social issues are well reported on. He commended some private media houses for dedicating time to socio economic issues.
