Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on September 21. The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

This year’s theme is ‘The Right to Peace-The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70.”

In a message, the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said the foundational document is a reminder that peace takes root when people are free from hunger, poverty and oppression and can thrive and prosper.

He said with the Universal Declaration as our guide, all must work to ensure the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Secretary General encourages all to speak up for gender equality, and creating inclusive societies, so as to ensure that together lasting peace can be created for all.

THE SECRETARY GENERAL – MESSAGE FOR INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE

ANTÓNIO GUTERRES

This year we mark International Day of Peace as we prepare to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

This foundational document is a reminder that peace takes root when people are free from hunger, poverty and oppression and can thrive and prosper.

With the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as our guide, we must ensure the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

I encourage you to speak up. For gender equality.  For inclusive societies.  For climate action.

Do your part at school, at work, at home. Every step counts.

Let us act together to promote and defend human rights for all, in the name of lasting peace for all.
