Global Handwashing Day is dedicated to increase awareness and highlight the significance of handwashing with soap as a way of preventing diseases and save lives.

The first GH Day was held by the Global Handwashing Partnership in 2008, and is marked on the 15th of October each year as a way of increasing and understanding the benefits of handwashing with soap.

It is also an opportunity to design, test, and implicate various methods to encourage people to wash their hands with soap.

The theme for the 2019 Global Handwashing Day is “Clean Hands for All,” reminding that we must be inclusive when addressing hand washing disparities. This year’s theme follows the push to leave no one behind in the Sustainable Development agenda.

Inequalities in handwashing facilities and effective handwashing promotion programs can put individuals at higher risk for diseases that impact their health, education, and economic outcomes.

The aim of Global Handwashing Day, therefore, is to foster and support a general culture of handwashing with soap in all societies.

Some important reasons for handwashing include creating a safer working environment for medical staff and the patients. Preventing diarrhea and uncomfortable intestinal diseases and avoidance of common eye infections.
