The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has recovered the lifeless body of an unidentified man from a drainage channel at Asylum Down in the Greater Accra Region.
According to a statement from the Service, a distress call was received at its Master Control on Wednesday, 8 April 2026, prompting an immediate response. A rescue crew from the Circle Fire Station, led by ADO I Richard Helegbe, was dispatched to the scene along a drainage channel feeding the Odaw River, opposite the Iran Clinic.
Upon arrival, the team successfully retrieved the body of the man, who is believed to be in his late 20s. He has not yet been identified, and the circumstances leading to his death remain unclear.
The recovered body has been handed over to the Police Service for preservation and further investigation, including efforts to establish the identity of the deceased and determine the cause of death.
Asylum Down is an inner‑city suburb of Accra, known for its busy residential and commercial activity, with several major roads and drainage systems that connect to the wider Accra area.
The GNFS’ prompt response reflects its broader mandate to handle water rescues and emergency recovery operations involving drains and other risky urban infrastructure, particularly in densely populated areas.
