Government clears debt of 2.63 billion owed ECG

Government has paid an amount of 2.63 billion Ghana Cedis debt owed ECG as of March 2020 as part of the energy sector’s recovery program to ensure a smooth running of its operations.

The sector Minister, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh mentioned that other measures being put in place with regards to the Power situation in the Middle to Northern belt which includes moving Ameri to the Ashanti Region to generate power in these areas and completing the upgrade of 161 KV to 330 KV from Kumasi to Kintampo.

He said the current power situation in the country is not due to financial constraints, but rather as a result of the upgrade of the transmission infrastructure to ensure that the systems are able to accommodate the load being transmitted across the country.

At a media briefing in Accra, Dr. Opoku Prempeh explained that since 2017 Government has made funds available to generation companies to pay fuel to power thermal plants which restored power throughout the country to meet demand.
