Government Statistician, Prof. Samuel Kobina Annim, has rejected claims that the cost of the 2021 Population and Housing Census is bloated.

He said the more than ¢520 million budget for the exercise is necessary and within all approved benchmarks.

Addressing MPs on the exercise, Prof. Annim broke down the cost of the different components of the census to justify the budget. According to him, there are more than 70 thousand enumerators and supervisors made up of 58 thousand enumerators and 12 thousand supervisors.

He said each enumerator will be paid more than ¢2,520 over the period, while each supervisor will also receive ¢2,940.

According to him, a simple calculation of this amount represents more than two-fifths of the allocated sum.

Prof Annim said for the first time in the country the impending Census will be a digital census. He said ahead of the census training, his outfit has procured 76,500 at a unit cost of $170 or ¢1,200.

He explained that this represents more than one-fifth of the cost of the exercise.
