Government to change long custodial sentences – Interior Minister

Government is to change the system of long custodial sentences where remand prisoners are forgotten.

There is also a programme to rehabilitate the prisons and help the convicts to acquire skills to make them useful citizens when they are released.

Speaking at a ceremony to unveil a new gate at the Prisons Headquarters in Accra, the Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery said government is working to provide more accommodation for the security services.

The new gate has been beautifully decorated with the monuments of a lion on each side signifying the boldness of the Service.

According to the Director General of Prisons, Patrick Missah, the ten-year strategic Development Plan is aimed at modernizing the physical structures of the Prisons Service.

He noted that the beautification includes painting the residence of the prison officers across the country and constructing the fence walls.

The Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery said government is working towards constructing a National Barracks for the Service.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO), Superintendent Vitalis Iyeh, said the event is a testimony of more to be done.

The PRO explained that there is a new collaboration between Zoomlion and the Prisons Service to promote cleanliness in the country.

The remaining projects are expected to be replicated in the other prison centres in Ghana.
