The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, has revealed the government’s plan to establish the country’s first marine protected area at Cape Three Points in the Western Region.

“The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture is advancing the establishment of Ghana’s first marine protected area at Cape Three Points in the Ahanta West District in the Western Region, targeted for 2026,” she said.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at the Presidency on August 6, the Minister stated that the initiative forms part of a broader national conservation strategy and is based on scientific assessments and extensive stakeholder engagement.

To ensure ecological and socio-economic benefits, the Ministry has held consultations with traditional rulers, local fishers, civil society organisations, academia, and development partners.

The Minister also announced that Ghana has formally joined RAMPAO (Réseau des Aires Marines Protégées en Afrique de l’Ouest), a regional body promoting sustainable marine conservation in West Africa.

She emphasized that the move will enhance Ghana’s access to expertise, partnerships, and strategic support in managing marine protected areas.
