Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association, GPMA, has appealed to the government to set up the Plastic Levy Fund Authority to utilise the Environmental Excise Tax to address the plastic waste menace.

At a news conference in Accra, the President of the Association, Ebo Botwe said money accrued from the tax, which is about ¢911.6 million will be able to construct six ultra-modern PET Bottle Recycling Plants and two Plastic-To-Fuel-Plants.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA) has called on the government to ban the importation of flexible plastic bags from China into Ghana.

According to the group, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ensures that GPMA members conform to the production of Oxo-bio additive flexible plastic packaging but alleged that products from China do not conform to the directive.

“The Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation made it mandatory to use Oxo-bio additive in our manufacturing process to check plastic pollution,” the GPMA said at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday.
