President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government is preparing to begin the procurement process for the construction of a new airport in Wa to improve transport and accelerate economic development in the Upper West Region.

Speaking when the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs paid a courtesy call on him at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, the President said government is close to securing approval from the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) to start the procurement process for the project.

“We are about to go to the Public Procurement Authority for authorisation to begin procurement for the new airport in Wa,” he said.

President Mahama explained that the proposed airport forms part of a broader plan to strengthen transport infrastructure and position the Upper West Region as a major commercial and logistics hub linking Ghana to the Sahel.

He said the region occupies a strategic position in promoting cross-border trade and economic cooperation and that government intends to take advantage of opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to boost trade and investment.

The President noted that government is investing in roads, railways and aviation to improve the movement of people, goods and services across the country.

He added that efforts are also underway to simplify administrative procedures and invest in warehousing and transport services to connect Ghanaian products to regional and continental markets.

According to President Mahama, the new Wa Airport is expected to improve accessibility to the Upper West Region, attract investment, support trade activities and contribute to the region’s long-term economic transformation.
