Government has terminated the appointment of the care-taker Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ing. Samuel Boakye-Appiah.
A statement from the Ministry of Energy said the termination follows the expiration of Mr. Boakye-Appiah’s contract term in 2018.
He has been directed to handover his duties to his Deputy, Kwame Agyemang-Budu.
The outgone CEO was appointed in February, 2017 by President Akufo-Addo to act in that capacity until a substantive CEO was approved.
This also comes days after the government officially handed over the country’s electricity distribution business to ECG following the cancellation of the concession agreement with the Power Distribution Service, (PDS).
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo justified the decision saying it was in the interest of the public as it was important to protect the assets of the Electricity Company of Ghana which is worth some $3 billion.
The statement reads:
“It is observed that your contract as Care-Taker Chief Executive Officer of Electricity Company of Ghana expired in 2018.
In this regard, I am directed to request you to take necessary steps to hand over your duties to Mr. Kwame Agyemang-Budu, Deputy Managing Director of Electricity Company of Ghana with immediate effect.
Please accept the gratitude of H.E the President for the invaluable services you rendered to the nation.
We wish you well in your future endeavours.”
