The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has announced plans to present a comprehensive retooling and capitalisation plan for the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to Cabinet and subsequently brief Parliament on measures aimed at protecting and maximising the value of the state broadcaster’s assets.
The Minister made the remarks on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, while responding to concerns raised by the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, regarding the protection and management of GBC’s assets, particularly its lands.
Mr Afenyo-Markin urged the Minister to prioritise the safeguarding of GBC’s assets as part of his mandate and provide Parliament with details of actions being taken to preserve and enhance the value of the Corporation.
“I want to remind the Minister for Government Communications that protecting the assets of GBC forms a key part of his mandate. The public deserves to know what ministerial actions have been taken regarding GBC and the specific measures being implemented to safeguard its assets and enhance its value,” the Minority Leader stated.
Responding to the concerns, Mr Kwakye Ofosu assured Parliament that the government is taking steps to secure GBC’s assets while positioning the Corporation for growth and competitiveness in the media landscape.
“To ensure that GBC’s lands and other valuable assets are protected, I will soon present a comprehensive retooling and capitalisation plan to Cabinet and subsequently brief Parliament on its details. Through this initiative, we intend to leverage some of GBC’s valuable assets to reposition the Corporation as Ghana’s premier broadcasting institution,” he said.
The Minister noted that the planned reforms would focus on strengthening the operational capacity of GBC while ensuring the long-term sustainability of the country’s public broadcaster.
The exchange formed part of parliamentary discussions on the future of GBC and the need to preserve state assets while improving the Corporation’s ability to deliver quality public service broadcasting.
