A group calling itself, Concerned Citizens of Aflao in The Ketu South Municipal Assembly is demanding an explanation from Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo over the closure of two Courts in their area.
In a press statement signed by The Convener/Coordinator, Mawuko Atisu said:, “Having known the relevance of these two courts in the Aflao and beyond, we believe these closures will have a serious impact on our people. Aside denying many of our people from getting justice at quickly and cheaply as possible, travelling to Agbozume and Keta to access can be a risky thing to do”
The statement further said: “Though no reason was assigned for the closure of the two courts from the report available to us, we believe the Chief Justice might have genuine reasons for closing the two courts”, which they called on the Municipal Chief Executive to take steps to remedy the problems leading to the closure of the courts for the two courts to reopened as soon as possible.
They believe it is time a new courthouse is built to house Aflao District Court after it operated for over two years in Aflao Urban Council structure.
The Group described the closure notice as shock and disturbing news,… “That the two courts in Aflao – Circuit Court at Aflao Tokor and District Court at Aflao Police Station have been closed down by Her Ladyship the Chief Justice of Ghana Sophia Akuffo”.
Their statement was in respond to the notice below: “On 27/03/19 about 1600 hours, a team of Judicial Service Staff from Accra arrived in Aflao with notice from the Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo directing the closure of Aflao Circuit Court and District Magistrate Court respectively with effect from 31/03/19.
The notice further directed that, all cases at the Circuit Court be transferred to Keta Circuit Court whilst cases at the District Court be transferred to Agbozume District Magistrate Court with effect from 01/04/19.
Information gathered by police indicates that, all the staffs at both Courts have been transferred. Further development would be communicated, please”.
