The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) in collaboration with Vitens Grider, a Dutch-based water company, has commissioned the Okataban-man Water for life Project to supply clean water to over 10,000 residents of the area.
The Water for Life is a Dutch Foundation that provided financial and technical support towards the laying of water distribution pipelines at Okataban-man in the Adenta-Medina Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.
GWCL says anyone who wants to connect water from the main water distribution pipeline to his or her house should pay a minimum amount of GHc500, which has been subsidised by Water for Life.
So far, 26 communities in the Central, Western, Greater Accra and Northern regions have benefitted from the Water for Life Project.
Addressing a durbar at Okataban-man on Thursday (December 5, 2019), to commission the Water Supply Project, the Chairman of Water for Life, Mr Martin den Blanken, said every Dutch citizen pays a small amount of money on their monthly water bills to support the implementation of the project.
He said the Foundation has been working in Ghana for the past 15 years and would continue to collaborate with the GWCL and invest in distribution lines to ensure all Ghanaians enjoy clean water for good health and wellbeing.
Globally, there are six hundred million people who do not have access to clean water.
The Deputy Managing Director of GWCL in charge of Special Projects, Mr Peter de-Veer, who chaired the function entreated the residents to channel all their concerns regarding water connection from the main distribution line to their homes through the GWCL’s District Manager for redress.
He advised the residents to refrain from any illegal water connection since anyone caught in any wrongful act would be prosecuted.
The Chief of Okataban-man, Nii Shika Gborbilor, in his welcome remarks, commended the GWCL and the Water for Life for providing clean water to the community and pledged to continue supporting the project and other developmental initiatives in the area.
The Chairman of Okataban-man Resident Association, Mr Kafui Amegah, for his part, urged the GWCL’s Management to bring their monthly water bills regularly and timely to prevent any disconnection and confrontation and appealed to government to construct drains and deplorable roads in the area.
