Harvesting of all wood species banned, Chinese factories shutdown- Savanna Regional Minister

The Savannah Regional Security Council has closed down some Chinese factories in the region that are into charcoal burning hence degrading the forest cover of the region.

Savannah Regional Minister, Saeed Muhazu Jibril, who made the disclosure said harvesting of all kinds of wood species and including rosewood in the region has been banned.

He said some individuals have been arrested for flouting the ban.

Addressing the media after a REGSEC at Damongo the Regional Minister said government through the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry is providing the regional Security Council with some pickups vehicles and a speed boat to fight those doing illegal mining close to the bodies in the region.

Mr Jilbri said the Chief Director of the Ministry has been charged within two weeks to ensure that the needed logistics are release to the region to fight forest degradation and illegal mining.

Sector Samuel Abu Jinapor said the ban on harvest of all species in the Savannah Region is the best decision.

He said the ban on wood species in the region has forced many of the youth to go into farming which has resulted into bumper harvest in the region. He charged the regional security council to keep up with the fight against environmental degradation.
