To ensure durability and Value for Money, Contractors, especially, those who undertake projects for Public Institutions have been  asked to use quality materials in their work. This came to light when members of the Media Coalition Against Open Defecation inspected toilet facilities constructed under the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area, (GAMA), Sanitation and Water project for a number of Public Basic Schools in the

La Nkwantanang Municipality. Head Teachers of the schools complained of shoddy work by contractors and also residents practicing open defecation on school compounds.

A number of public basic schools in the La Nkwantanang and Ga East Municipalities were beneficiaries of the GAMA project. Most of these facilities became operational in October last year, with some barely six months old. However, poor management of these facilities by school authorities came up during the inspection.

Headmistress for Queen of Peace R/C Basic school, Rhoda Dabinla blamed contractors for the poor state of the toilet facilities. She said “we have to tell contractors who do projects like this not to use inferior materials.

At the Madina SDA Basic school, people living in the school’s compound practice open defecation using polythene bags. Headmistress of the school, Beatrice Opoku said: “The problem we have here is the people who live in the school compound. They re not staff, and they defecate in polythene bags all over. They claim the land is theirs, the matter has been in and out of court”

Patron of the Media Coalition against Open Defecation Dr. Doris Yaa Dartey raised concerns about the poor maintenance of the facilities.

The tour of the schools by members of the Media Coalition against Open Defecation was supported by GAMA Project.
