Tsatsadu Micro Hydroelectric Dam To Be Expanded To Generate More Power

Story by Dominic Hlordzi.

The Bui Power Authority will soon expand the Tsatsadu Micro Hydroelectric Dam from the current 45 kilowatts to 120 kilowatts to generate more power unto the national grid.

The Chief Executive of Bui Power Authority, Mr. Kofi Dzamesi said the Authority is working out the modalities towards the expansion project.

He said this on his first working visit to the Tsatsadu Generating Station at Alavanyo in the Volta region.

“The future plan is to increase it to 120KW from 45KW. The question is, is it feasible? Is it economically feasible?, so once you are able to answer these two questions, then we will go ahead and increase the power generation unit up to 120KW.”Mr. Dzamesi explains.

On funding for the expansion project, Mr. Dzamesi said the Authority intends using its own resources.

“ Bui Power has put it in its budget to do it, so there is funding for it.”The Chief Executive assures.

He however said the expansion project will also depend on payment of power purchased by the Electricity Company of Ghana.

The micro-hydro power plant known as the Tsatsadu Generating Station was inaugurated in November 2020.

The Plant, situated on the Tsatsadu Waterfalls in the Hohoe Municipality, has a capacity of 45kW.

The hydro dam which is a run-of-river facility does not require a reservoir.

It consists of a concrete diversion weir, an intake structure, diversion channel, a forebay, steel penstock, a powerhouse and a transmission line which ties the electricity generated unto the local distribution grid.

The Micro Generating Station was constructed by Ghanaian engineers and the Authority will again rely on them for the expansion project.
