Deputy General Secretary of Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU), Morgan Ayawine, has cautioned the Tema Metropolitan Assembly against indiscriminate demolition of hair salons in Tema.

He said it has come to the attention of the Union that the Assembly collects taxes from the salon operators, yet demolish their structures at night without their knowledge.

This, he said, has put most of them out of business which is affecting their livelihood.

The Deputy General Secretary was speaking at the Sixth Quadrennial Delegates Conference of the Ghana Hairdressers and Beauticians Association, GHABA.

He said ICU is one of the Trade Unions that has the informal sector at heart and therefore sees GHABA as a useful group to help the youth who want to venture into self-employment.

The Outgoing National President of GHABA, Elizabeth Bossman, said the Association dreams of setting up a cosmetology academy to train apprentices to bring them in tune with modern technology. She said the establishment of the academy will facilitate teaching and learning of innovative programmes to make the industry competitive.
