As Ghana celebrates its 63rd Independence today, General Secretary of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU-GHANA), Solomon Kotei has commended the country for the peaceful transition in government for the past years.
He said the transfer process is an evidence of a well-established democracy making Ghana a beacon of democracy not only in Africa but the world at large.
In an interview with GBC’s Radio Ghana, Mr. Kotei said the manner in which new governments continue projects left behind by previous governments is laudable but there is more to be achieved.
Today, 6th March 2020 marks 63 years since Ghana gained independence from their colonial masters.
The Independence fight championed by the first president of the country, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah made Ghana, then Gold Coast the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence.
Since independence in 1957, the country each year celebrates its liberation at the capital city, Accra.  But the Akufo-Addo-led government last year decided to change the location of the independence celebration to the capital city of the Northern Region, Tamale.
The location this year is the Capital of the Ashanti Region, Kumasi.
The late President will always be remembered for many achievements including the powerful speech he delivered on the sixth of March proclaiming “Ghana will be free forever”, from the British Monarch to millions of Ghanaians gathered at Independence Square now Black Stars Square.
General Secretary of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union, Solomon Kotei said the peaceful co-existence between Christians and Muslims is immeasurable.

He said the democratic institutions of Ghana have proven to be the most unifying institutions of the state which has resulted in the country being one of the most stable on the continent.

The theme for Independence Day 2020 is “Consolidating Our Gains”.
