IGP talks tough on dealing with recent robbery attacks in Upper East region

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. James Oppong-Boanuh, has given assurance that security will be beefed up in the Upper East region to stem the recent robbery attacks in several parts of the region.

There have been series of robbery attacks and other forms of violent crimes in the Upper East and North East regions which have led to the killing of some travelers and loss of cash and other valuables.

Mr. Oppong-Boanuh is in the region for an assessment of security arrangements put in place to curb violent crimes including highway armed robbery attacks that have claimed the lives of some drivers and travelers.

There have been series of robbery attacks and other forms of violent crimes in the Upper East and North East regions which have led to the killing of some travelers and loss of cash and other valuables. Several attacks were carried out on commercial vehicles and trucks carting tomatoes and other goods from Burkina-Faso to the southern part of the country which eventually led to a strike by the transport operators.

A Friday dawn attack by two masked men led to the shooting and killing of two drivers in two separate attacks at Pusu-Namongo in the Talensi district of the upper east region.

Meanwhile, reports show that most of the robbery attacks that were launched on drivers and their vehicle occupants occurred within the Northeast and the Upper East regions. Also, commercial tricycle operators in Sandema in the Builsa North district of the Upper East region have reportedly petitioned the Municipal Assembly over incessant robbery attacks on traders and commercial vehicle operators in the area.

Addressing the media after his tour of some selected crime scenes in the region, the Inspector General of Police, James Oppong-Boanuh gave the assurance that security will be beefed up in the Upper East region to stem the recent robbery attacks in several parts of the region.

In an interview with GBC NEWS, Director of Police Public Affairs, Supt. Sheila Abayie Buckman, charged citizens to take their personal security issues seriously. She spoke about measures put in place to provide Ghana-Burkina Faso tomato traders the needed security.

The IGP’s first point of call was at Sandema, capital of the Builsa North District, Chiana and Katiu in the Kassena-Nankana West District. The IGP, who was accompanied by Director General of Police, COP Kwaku Boadu Peprah, Director of Operations, DCOP Dr. Sayibu Pabi Gariba, Chief Staff Officer, ACP Joseph Owusu Ansah and the Director Public Affairs, engaged with the police administration in the region to strategize on how to bring the crime situation under control.
